At the Codebase Kids Camp at Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences, children immersed themselves in the world of programming through play. The goal is to foster digital skills at an early age.
The Codebase Kids Camp was held again at Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences in 2025. This initiative, jointly organized by the state of Vorarlberg and the university, gave elementary school children the opportunity to gain their first programming experience. "Children should learn from an early age not only to consume digital media, but also to actively shape it," explained the project management.
There had already been two two-day workshops last year, and this time three courses were offered. Demand was high, and many registrations could not be accommodated. The children were supervised by students who taught the content in a child-friendly and playful manner.
The camp consisted of four modules teaching fundamentals such as computer science, Morse code, and the binary alphabet. Working with Scratch and robots was particularly popular. "The children's enthusiasm is contagious—it's a joy to see their creativity," said one supervisor.
At the end of the program, the young participants presented their projects to parents and relatives. From robots to small games to creative implementations, the children demonstrated what they had learned. Many parents were surprised by how quickly they absorbed the basic knowledge.
At the end of the ceremony, the children were named "Pixel Masters." State Minister for Education Barbara Schöbi-Fink presented the certificates and small surprise packages. This is intended to strengthen their motivation to continue engaging with digital education in the future.
