Wimbledon is turning into a surprise hectic schedule for Laura Siegemund. The 37-year-old is still competing in three events. She's honored to have her name on a special list.
After her surprise appearance in the round of 16 in the Wimbledon singles, Laura Siegemund plans to make a quick decision about whether she will continue competing in all three events at the grass-court classic. "As of now, I feel okay," said the 37-year-old. "I plan to continue playing normally, especially the doubles. I'll have to think about mixed doubles, but it's going to be tough to maintain all three." She plans to make it depend on how she feels on Saturday.
Siegemund reached the round of 16 in Wimbledon singles for the first time in her career with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Australian Open champion Madison Keys of the USA on Friday. She then won her first-round match with doubles partner Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil.
She has two matches scheduled for Saturday: In the doubles, she will face the British pair Jodie Burrage and Sonay Kartal in the second round. The match doesn't start until 1:30 p.m. local time (12:30 p.m. CEST). To conclude the day of tennis, she and Edouard Roger-Vasselin (France) will face Nikola Mektic of Croatia and Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada in the first round of mixed doubles. The singles round of 16 against Solana Sierra of Argentina is on Sunday.
Siegemund is only the sixth player in the history of professional tennis to be among the top 16 at Wimbledon, with 37. Previously, legends Billie Jean King, Virginia Wade, Martina Navratilova, Venus and Serena Williams achieved this.
"The list sounds like my name doesn't fit in there," she said with a laugh. "They're all top people, and then I come along and manage to do it in my old age." She achieved her accomplishments through hard work. "I feel honored to be included there; not everyone has achieved that," Siegemund said.
