Of these, eleven million flights were classified as low-cost. Worldwide, low-cost air travel accounted for approximately 30 percent of the total number of flights, while the market share for Europe was reported at 31 percent. For flights from Germany, however, the share was only 21 percent, and for domestic flights, it was only 15 percent.

In international comparison, market shares have shifted since 2010. Asia, which long held third place, now leads the rankings in terms of total flights with a 31 percent share. North America follows with 29 percent and Europe with 23 percent. The Asian market also now leads in the low-cost sector with a 35 percent share. Europe has a similarly high market share, followed by North America with 25 percent.
