Trump expects Hamas response within 24 hours

In efforts to secure a ceasefire in the Gaza war, US President Donald Trump said he expects a response from Hamas within 24 hours. Trump said this on Friday night (US local time). The radical Islamic organization had previously announced that it was consulting with other Palestinian groups about the US-backed initiative. Trump had already announced on Tuesday that Israel had agreed to the terms of a 60-day ceasefire.
However, the positions of Israel and Hamas recently appeared to have hardened: While Hamas is demanding a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip, the Israeli government has reiterated its goal of crushing Hamas. The mediators, the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, had put forward a proposal for a 60-day ceasefire.
Report: Ten live hostages against Palestinian prisoners
The exact terms of the mediators' new proposal remain unclear. The New York Times, citing an Israeli defense official and a Palestinian close to Hamas, reported that the proposed deal includes the release of ten of the surviving hostages and the transfer of the bodies of 18 abductees in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.
According to official Israeli sources, 50 people kidnapped from Israel are still being held in the Gaza Strip, at least 20 of whom are believed to be alive. The release of the hostages and the repatriation of the bodies will be carried out in phases, in five groups over a period of 60 days, the newspaper reported.
The war was triggered by the attack by Hamas and other Islamist terrorist organizations on Israel on October 7, 2023, in which around 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 were taken hostage to Gaza. Since then, more than 56,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, according to the Hamas-controlled health authority.
