Women's Basketball League WNBA: Without injured Sabally: Phoenix loses Finals against Aces
Satou Sabally missed the chance to become the fourth German basketball player, following Marlies Askamp, Leonie Fiebich, and her sister Nyara, to win a championship in the US Women's NBA Basketball League (WNBA). Her team, the Phoenix Mercury, lost the fourth game of the final series at home to the Las Vegas Aces 86-97 (38-54). The Aces thus won the best-of-seven series 4-0 and claimed the title again after winning it in 2022 and 2023.
Sabally was unable to play in Game 4 after suffering a concussion in Game 3. She collided with an opponent late in the final quarter and remained on the floor for several minutes. Sabally had a strong third game and impressed in the Finals, averaging 21.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists.
Las Vegas wins third championshipThe Aces controlled the fourth game of the finals series, building a 16-point halftime lead. A'ja Wilson stood out for Las Vegas with 31 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three blocks. Wilson was named the Finals' Most Valuable Player after winning the MVP award in the regular season.
In WNBA history, only six other players have won both MVP awards in a single season. The Aces celebrated their third championship; only the Minnesota Lynx, Houston Comet, and Seattle Storm have more titles in the WNBA, with four.
