First talks between China and the USA planned

Washington. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer are scheduled to meet with their Chinese counterparts in Geneva, holding the first talks at this level in months.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce confirmed the meeting in Switzerland. A ministry spokesperson said China would "neither sacrifice its principles nor global equality or justice" in seeking an agreement.
US President Donald Trump had previously claimed that the US and China were negotiating a reduction in their import tariffs. Beijing denied this and demanded that Trump reduce his high tariffs first.
No country has been hit harder by Trump's trade war than China. Trump imposed a 145 percent tariff on imports from China as part of what he called his "Liberation Day" on April 2. Beijing responded to Trump's drastic tariff increases by raising its own tariffs on imports of US products to as much as 125 percent. China also tightened restrictions on exports of certain strategically important minerals to the US and suspended imports of a wide range of US agricultural products.
