Merz, Macron, Starmer, Tusk: European leaders are jointly calling on Russia to agree to a 30-day ceasefire. The Kremlin is demanding more details.

By Nicolas Richter , Berlin

Three days after his election as German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz departed for Ukraine on Friday for his first visit as German head of government. Merz traveled with heads of state and government of some of Germany's most important allies: French President Emmanuel Macron , British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk . They arrived by train in Kyiv on Saturday morning, where they will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

There was great anticipation in the EU for Friedrich Merz's arrival. However, during his inaugural visit to Brussels, the focus quickly shifted to the controversial issues of border controls and EU debt.
