What to do in case of a power outage? Three solutions for emergencies at home

Bonn. The freezer is getting warm, the heating is off, the house is dark? Power outages are actually quite rare in Germany and usually don't last very long: around 12.2 minutes per year per consumer, according to 2022 figures from the Federal Network Agency. Those who want to be on the safe side can generate their own electricity or store it for emergencies. However, the greater the degree of self-sufficiency, the more expensive and complicated it becomes. Three solutions:

Power banks and solar chargers keep small devices like smartphones, tablets, or battery-powered flashlights running. Of course, only when they're charged. They can't power larger devices.

Pieter Heubach stands next to the solar modules that generate electricity for the house in Schalense. There are 28 panels in total.

Pieter and Kristin Heubach have installed a photovoltaic system on their house in Schalense near Wolgast. With the help of subsidies, they say the costs have been kept within limits so far. What prospective buyers should be aware of and what prejudices exist.

Specialist retailers offer a wide range of options, from small power generators to balcony power stations with battery storage. The Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) advises: Consider in advance which devices you want to operate. This way, the system won't be overloaded in an emergency. A kettle, for example, can easily consume 1500 to 2000 watts, so it needs a corresponding amount of power. Those opting for a fuel-powered generator should also consider the following:

  • Never operate generators indoors as there is a risk of suffocation from the exhaust fumes.
  • There are maximum permissible quantities for the storage of fuels. Currently, 10 liters of gasoline or 20 liters of diesel can be stored in basements. According to the BBK, gas cylinders are not permitted in basements.
  • If sensitive devices such as computers are to be operated, the system must be suitable for this and provide a correspondingly stable voltage and frequency.

You can also supply your own home network with electricity – provided you have the necessary budget. The BBK recommends consulting and installation by specialist companies, as only they are authorized to carry out work on your home's electrical system. Furthermore, this should only be done in consultation with the grid operator.

Which technology is used—whether battery storage, a suitably equipped photovoltaic system, or a generator—depends on the specific circumstances and your own requirements. Here, too, it's important to determine in advance what you want to operate to ensure sufficient capacity is planned.
