To avoid heatstroke and sunburn, you should always make sure to drink plenty of water, apply sunscreen regularly, avoid physical exertion, wear a hat and avoid staying in the sun for too long.

But does that mean you should stay away from the beaches? Not necessarily, because Mallorca has many shady coves where you can keep cool even in extreme heat.

The travel reporter presents a selection of cool beaches with shady trees on Mallorca.

The mountainous peninsula of La Victòria is particularly known among active travelers for the old watchtower Talaia, but is also home to one of Mallorca's most beautiful beaches.

The Coll Baix beach is easily accessible by boat or by a 45-minute hike . Some climbing experience is required, as the descent into the bay involves some rugged cliffs. In hot weather, the hike requires extra stamina—if you don't want to work up a sweat, it's best to set off early in the morning.

As a reward for the journey, beach lovers are rewarded with a view of a picturesque and often deserted bay, completely free of rental loungers, jet skis, and banana boats. The 200-meter-long beach is especially beautiful in the evening, when the long shadows of the high cliffs cast across the sand.

In the north of Mallorca lies one of the most beautiful and shady beaches in the Balearic Islands: Playa de Formentor. The approximately one-kilometer-long sandy beach nestles against the palm- and pine-lined coast of the peninsula of the same name.

The fine sand, turquoise sea, shallow water, and lifeguards make this picturesque stretch of coast even more popular. It can get crowded during the summer months. Those who want to avoid the high parking fees at the nearby car park can also arrive by bus or excursion boat from Alcudia and Pollenca.

Alcanada Beach is located in another bay on Mallorca's north coast, about three kilometers from Alcúdia . This stretch of beach isn't quite as picture-perfect as the Formentor coast, but it's more pristine and less crowded.

The pebble and sandy beach stretches for approximately 700 meters in front of a shady pine forest, offers shallow water access, and is particularly well protected from waves by the offshore lighthouse island of Alcanada. Alcanada beach is best reached by car due to a nearby parking lot, but offers little infrastructure.

A few kilometers further north, in the resort of Cala d'Or , another bay offers natural protection from the heat: Cala Serena, with its approximately 20-meter-wide beach. The beautiful view of this idyllic bay can be enjoyed from the shade of the trees at the back of the beach, on the wooded cliffs on the northern side, or from one of the natural rock grottos.

Due to the shallow water access and few waves, the bay is also ideal for children – however, there are no toilets on the beach.

In the northeast of Mallorca, north of the resort of Cala Millor , lies the approximately four-kilometer-long beach of Sa Marjal. Visually, this stretch of coast is immediately striking with its unusual, yet natural, gray sand. A large pine forest provides ample shade right on the beach for those who want to cool off.

The bay is largely undeveloped, and there are no hotels or resorts in the immediate vicinity. Because of this—and because the bay is far enough away from the popular holiday resorts—the beach is uncrowded. The gently sloping water and few waves also guarantee safe swimming fun with children.

Small but beautiful: The narrow bay of Cala Llombards, which also belongs to the municipality of Santanyi, is bordered by a 130-meter-deep sandy beach that is popular with locals and travelers alike. The white sandy beach slopes gently into the water and is very child-friendly due to the few waves.

At 1,300 meters, Santa Ponça Beach is one of the longest sandy beaches in Mallorca. If you can't snag one of the coveted loungers and parasols, you'll find plenty of free shade in the small pine forest bordering the centrally located sandy beach.

The beach of Santa Ponça stretches for 1300 meters in the center of the resort.

This comfortable resort is located about 20 kilometers from the island's capital, Palma , and is especially popular with Mallorca fans from Germany and Great Britain. There are numerous hotels, resorts, restaurants, and leisure activities, including jet skis, kayaks, paragliding, and stand-up paddleboarding. After some relaxation in the shade of the surrounding pine and pine forest, you can explore the approximately 60-meter-long bay, framed by rocks. This is best done with goggles, a snorkel, and fins, as many fish can be observed along the rocky edges in the clear water. A little further out at sea, there is also a sunken shipwreck, which can be explored on organized diving tours.

The Torrent de Pareis stream plunges through the mountains in western Mallorca and flows into the sea near the municipality of Sa Calobra. There, framed by breathtaking cliffs, lies a picturesque beach that is especially popular with nature lovers.

The deep gorge is a spectacular hiking and climbing paradise. On the final section, two narrow caves must be traversed before the almost circular gorge opens up with a small pebble beach. Those less able to walk can also reach the shady beach by car or excursion boat. Therefore, despite its secluded location, the bay is unfortunately often crowded.

The beach is not suitable for children due to the mostly high waves.
