Unfortunately for Club América fans, the Coapa team no longer has a chance of reaching the 2025 Leagues Cup quarterfinals.
Although they mathematically have a chance of catching Puebla (currently fourth place) in points, the 2025 Leagues Cup tiebreaker criteria indicate that the first consideration is games won in 90 minutes, and the 'Franja' has two.
With two draws, América has no chance of making it to the quarterfinals even if they beat the Timbers by a good goal difference on Wednesday.
How is qualification determined in the 2025 Leagues Cup?The format changed this year. There are no longer groups; they are organized by league . Each competition (MLS and Liga MX) qualifies its top four teams for the quarterfinals. The tiebreakers in the table operate according to the following hierarchy:
- Points won in regular time (wins in 90 minutes)
- Goal difference
- Goals in favor
- Goals conceded and fair play table (minus yellow and red cards)
The Eagles started with a draw and a penalty shootout loss to Real Salt Lake, then tied 3-3 against Minnesota United and won the shootout 8-7 .
In that match, they played with a man down for over half an hour due to Igor Lichnovsky's expulsion, but managed to equalize in the 90th minute with a header from Sebastián Cáceres. The team showed character, but it also revealed that many of its key players are below their best.

André Jardine may use some substitutes, given that the sporting situation is no longer at stake. This is how América's coach could start the match:
- 30. Rodolfo Cota
- 34. Dagoberto Espinoza
- 4. Sebastian Caceres
- 29. Ramón Juárez
- 15. Ralph Orquín
- 28. Erick 'Chiquito' Sánchez
- 13. Alan Cervantes
- 7. Brian 'Rayito' Rodriguez
- 20. Alexis Gutiérrez
- 12. Isaiah Violante
- 9. Henry Martin
Portland has been one of the tournament's most solid teams. They won both matches: first against Atlético San Luis and then against Querétaro. They have six points and are aiming for a place among the top four in MLS.
However, several teams are threatening their qualification if they slip up, so they are forced to at least avoid a defeat against the 'Eagles' .
Possible Portland Timbers vs. América lineupPhil Neville, who has rotated in his previous matches with Portland , is expected to come out with a competitive squad in search of a good result against America:
