An Olympic athlete has been acquitted of a doping conviction because the positive result was due to kissing her boyfriend.

Consuelito Velázquez already sang about it in the first half of the 20th century when she asked a hypothetical lover to kiss her a lot, even though she had never received such attention from any man. More than eighty years later, perhaps the French Olympic fencer Ysaora Thibus would have also wished for a little more restraint in her impulses after being sanctioned for doping with a four-year suspension for exchanging affectionate gestures with her boyfriend.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ruled that her positive test for ostarine - a banned muscle-building substance - during a competition in Paris in January 2024 was caused by kissing her then-boyfriend , American fencer Race Imboden.

The CAS has concluded that there was no malice, finding it scientifically plausible that repeated kisses over several days with Olympic medalist Imboden—who was taking ostarine at the time —caused accidental contamination . In the process, the court dismissed an appeal by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which had sought a four-year ban.

Instead, the CAS upheld an earlier ruling by the International Fencing Federation's Disciplinary Tribunal against Doping (DDT), which had already cleared Thibus—a silver medalist in the team foil at the Tokyo 2020 Games—of all wrongdoing .

"The CAS Panel has ruled that the anti-doping rule violation involving the presence of ostarine was not intentional and that there is no question of Ms. Thibus's lack of fault or negligence (...) The DDT decision is upheld and the appeal dismissed," the court said in a statement .

And Ana Belén already said it: "Kisses, tenderness, what a waste of love, so much madness." A 'madness' that could have cost Thibus dearly.
