Gerardo Werthein ratified the request for peace in the war between Ukraine and Russia and said that Argentina has not changed its mind
Amid tensions after Argentina voted against Ukraine 's request for Russia to withdraw its troops, Argentine Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein defended the national government's position and said there had been no change of opinion.
“At the G20 in South Africa, before this resolution was on the table, Argentina stated that we advocate for a peaceful and diplomatic resolution to end the war in Ukraine. When the United States presented this, [Javier] Milei said that this is a unique opportunity to support a peace process. Hundreds of thousands of people died here and the President privileged that there is a glimmer of hope for peace ,” he explained on LN+.
He added: “There was no change of opinion. The United States resolution says that it calls for an end to this war in which many people died. There are no adjectives and no responsibilities are assigned. Europe had a resolution with a lot of rhetoric from the past but without any proposal to resolve it . Argentina will always be on the side that can participate in a peace process. When there are so many deaths and an opportunity to stop it, it must be done. The rest is discussed later.”
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Culture said that he does not know if Milei spoke with the President of Ukraine and insisted that the Argentine government's position is in favor of an immediate end to the war. "We must also consider that it is very important for Ukraine to recover its institutions, with elections, but first peace is needed. In this, Argentina shares the idea of the United States," he stressed.
Among other topics, Werthein reported that after the meeting at CPAC , the President of the United States, Donald Trump, invited Milei to lunch at the White House and explained: “It will be a meeting within the next 60 days, we are arranging it. The meeting was between two friends, to get closer.”
The foreign minister referred to the Argentine president's presence in the United States and his meeting with Trump, about which he remarked: " His [Milei's] image abroad is impressive, he couldn't walk at CPAC . It's not just the public, but officials. The prestige is given by what Milei does and not what he says. The president's agenda is for Argentines to be better off and that's why he travels and works."
In this sense, Werthein said that the figure of the libertarian abroad is on the rise and that, for this reason, the crypto scandal did not affect the perspective on him in the world. “ In the United States there is no cryptogate, I have not heard of it . Nobody asked me anything and I was with a lot of people. The only thing they ask me is how Milei managed to achieve so much in such a short time. At first it was hard to believe,” he said and added: “Libra cannot alter the image of the President because it is growing. It is increasingly important and respected because the facts support it. This is serious work for the benefit of the people.”
He also stated that the national government's intention is to get along with the United States because it is "extraordinary" for Argentines. In this regard, he stressed that Argentina is now "on the map of the world" and should take advantage of the possibility of signing trade agreements with the North American country to change the future of exports, while he questioned Mercosur, an organization that he described as "an old tool that has become a corset."
