Madrid school calendar 2025-2026: start dates, holidays, and vacations

Summer is coming to an end, and with the arrival of September, the summer holiday season comes to an end, marking the beginning of the return to work and school obligations across Spain. September is synonymous with "back to school," and in households with students, school supplies, from books to backpacks, are already being prepared for the new academic year and extracurricular activities.

In this context, the Community of Madrid has published the official calendar for the 2025-2026 academic year , which includes not only school days but also public holidays and vacation periods established for schools. The key dates that will mark the next school year are detailed below.

The Community of Madrid has announced that the start of the school year for publicly funded non-university schools will be on September 8th and will run until June 19th , with significant adjustments, especially for the youngest students. Children aged 0 to 3 will begin classes on the same day as the rest of the students, a change from previous years when their start time was a few days earlier. Specifically, the Official Gazette of the Community of Madrid has detailed that teaching activities for this group will end on July 31st, marking a more comprehensive and coordinated calendar for the first years of early childhood education.

The calendar includes the opening of classrooms for preschool, primary, and special education students starting September 8. Activities at nursery schools and children's homes also begin on that same day.

For secondary education, high school, and vocational training (FP), the school year will begin on Tuesday, September 9th , and will also run until June 19th. The only exception is for second-year high school students, whose completion schedule will depend on the official university entrance exam dates. In addition, schools are authorized to schedule final secondary school exams and assessments for outstanding subjects in high school and vocational training until June 23rd.

For other educational areas, Adult Education centers will begin the course on September 18th and will also conclude on June 19th. Professional Music and Dance Conservatories will begin classes on September 9th, with completion scheduled for the same date as the other educational levels, June 19th.

At the Official Language Schools, the course will begin on September 9 and run until June 25, 2026. At the Art Schools, activities will begin on two different dates: September 9 for the second year of the Visual Arts and Design training courses, and September 19 for the first year. In both cases, they will end on June 19. Finally, the Higher Art Education courses will begin on September 10 and end on June 19.

The first holiday period of the 2025/2026 school year in Madrid falls during Christmas. Students will be out of school from December 20, 2025, to January 7, 2026. Easter 2026 will be off from March 27 to April 6.
