Pope Francis

Since his election in 2013, Pope Francis has represented a voice of peace and justice in an increasingly polarized world. As the first pontiff from the Americas, Jorge Mario Bergoglio has brought his message of humility and service to the most disadvantaged, consolidating himself as a reference in the search for global brotherhood. However, his role transcends the boundaries of religion; he is a moral leader who calls on humanity to overcome individualism and foster dialogue in an international scenario dominated by conflicts, political tensions and economic crises.
One of his most influential works, the encyclical Fratelli tutti (2020), highlights the importance of cooperation, understanding and solidarity among nations. In it, Pope Francis denounces the throwaway culture and advocates a politics based on service and not power. His message is particularly relevant in a world where global powers prioritize their geopolitical interests over collective well-being.
Today, his message takes on greater urgency. The war between Russia and Ukraine is in its third year, leaving a trail of devastation and suffering. While Ukraine calls for “real and lasting peace,” Russia and the United States are exploring a diplomatic arrangement that could redefine the global balance. But Moscow’s pretensions and Washington’s stance complicate the path to true reconciliation.
The international community is facing a period of profound transformation. The European Union has condemned Russian aggression and imposed sanctions, while China is expanding its economic and political influence. In the United States, President Donald Trump is maintaining his protectionist strategy with tariffs that affect world trade, contributing to inflation and global economic instability.
In Germany, the recent elections have brought the conservative CDU party, led by Friedrich Merz, to victory, marking a shift to the right in German politics. This change could impact the stability of the European Union, especially in its relationship with Russia and China. At the same time, Mexico seeks to consolidate itself as a key player in the global economy, strengthening its trade ties through the USMCA and diversifying its international relations. But, in addition to the economy, it is also taking an active role in promoting peace and multilateralism.
Mexico has historically been a country that defends diplomacy and respect for the sovereignty of nations. In the current global scenario, it has sought to mediate in conflicts through its diplomatic representations and has promoted international cooperation to address humanitarian crises. It has supported resolutions at the UN in favor of peace and respect for international law, while promoting regional integration to face common challenges.
One of the key pillars of Mexican foreign policy is the strengthening of alliances for sustainable development, especially on issues such as human rights, gender equality and migration. In the context of the war between Russia and Ukraine, Mexico has constantly called on the parties in conflict to cease hostilities and seek negotiated solutions that respect the sovereignty of the nations involved. On several occasions, the Mexican government has promoted dialogue in multilateral forums and has maintained a firm position in defense of peace and international law.
Despite his delicate state of health, Pope Francis remains a moral beacon in a fragmented world. His call for fraternity and cooperation is a reminder that peace is not built with empty speeches or agreements that benefit only the dominant powers, but with a genuine commitment to justice and human dignity.
World leaders should heed their call or they will follow the path of their ambitions. Or not, dear reader?
