SEDI is eliminated: the Government seeks to simplify imports and reduce bureaucracy

Economy Minister Luis Caputo announced that the government will repeal the Statistical Import System (SEDI) , which replaced the Argentine Republic Import System (SIRA) in 2023. The measure comes just over a year after its creation. Caputo explained that the SEDI fulfilled its initial objective of “normalizing, making transparent, organizing and streamlining the import system,” but is now no longer necessary.
Caputo reported that the joint resolution of the Customs Collection and Control Agency (ARCA) and the Secretariat of Industry and Commerce of the Ministry of Economy will be published in the Official Gazette . The objective is to simplify procedures and make commercial exchanges more efficient.

SEDI was created to obtain advance information on import operations, in order to analyse and monitor statistical data on the entry of goods. However, recent analysis has shown that this information is no longer necessary. Therefore, the Government decided to repeal the system.
The SEDI was implemented at the end of 2023, in a context of reforms promoted by the Government of Javier Milei. The objective was to eliminate obstacles to foreign trade , reduce discretion and curb possible sources of corruption. Caputo stressed that the elimination of the SEDI will help facilitate imports and guarantee transparency in the process.
Caputo welcomed the measure and highlighted its positive impact on SMEs . By eliminating the SEDI, companies will have greater predictability in the deadlines and requirements for importing goods. This will allow them to save time and costs, which will facilitate their commercial activity.
This measure also puts an end to SIRA and any other system that gave state bureaucracy the power to decide who could import and who could not. Caputo stressed that this change will foster a more competitive environment.
The repeal of SEDI is part of a broader effort to adjust the foreign trade system to the international standards of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The Government seeks to ensure that Argentina conducts trade exchanges more efficiently and without bureaucratic obstacles.
Caputo concluded that this measure will simplify the import system, which will benefit both companies and the national economy.
In short, with the repeal of SEDI, Milei's government is taking an important step towards simplifying foreign trade. SMEs will benefit and greater competitiveness in global markets is expected.
