These areas of Spain will be on yellow alert today and the AEMET warns: there will be heavy rain, wind, and hail.

Wednesday arrives with umbrellas becoming an indispensable ally in much of the country. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued yellow warnings for thunderstorms, heavy rain , and strong gusts of wind in a total of 14 provinces. Furthermore, hail is not ruled out in several inland parts of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, which will further complicate the day.

The weather situation is marked by a low-pressure system located northwest of the Peninsula, accompanied by the deepening of a low pressure system over North Africa. This combination is generating an unstable environment that will result in very cloudy or completely overcast skies across most of the country. Only some areas in the southwest will escape the precipitation.

"There will be strong storms in many areas of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, some with strong winds and hail," the AEMET (Mexico City Meteorological Agency) warned through its official channels. This means the rain will not be simple showers; rather, it expects them to be accompanied by thunderstorms and will be especially intense during the afternoon.

Storm warnings affect much of the country, with a particular impact on communities in the central and eastern parts of the Iberian Peninsula. In Andalusia, Almería, Granada, and Jaén are under warning. In Castilla-La Mancha , Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara, and Toledo will be affected. The Castilian-Leonese provinces of Ávila, Burgos, León, Palencia, Segovia, Soria, and Valladolid are also under alert.

In Aragon, warnings are in effect for Huesca, Teruel, and Zaragoza, while in Catalonia, Lleida is the most prominent. The Community of Madrid, especially in areas such as the Sierra, Henares, and Vegas, is also experiencing adverse weather conditions. In Navarre and La Rioja, both the Pyrenees and the banks of the Ebro River will be monitored. Also under warning are parts of Cantabria, Álava (Basque Country), Murcia (northwest and coastal areas), and the Valencian Community, with Alicante and Valencia as critical areas.

The risk isn't limited to the amount of rain that may fall. The storms that will form starting at noon will be accompanied by other adverse weather conditions such as strong gusts of wind and even occasional hail, especially in inland and mountainous areas.

The AEMET (Meteorological Agency) has emphasized that these precipitations could be locally very heavy and persistent , especially in areas such as the Pyrenees, the two plateaus, the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, inland Catalonia, and the Balearic Islands. At higher elevations in the Pyrenees, light snowfall above 2,000 meters is also possible, a striking phenomenon for this time of year in May.
