Quino's heirs transfer the rights to Mafalda in Argentina to Penguin Random House.

The Penguin Random House group announced that starting next August it will begin publishing Mafalda, the famous Argentine comic strip created by cartoonist Joaquín Lavado , better known as Quino, following an agreement with his heirs , which ends a 55-year relationship with the local Ediciones De La Flor.
Sources at Penguin Random House said that, starting August 1 , the multinational publishing house will launch a reissue of the comic strip first published in the Argentine weekly 'Primera Plana' in 1964 and compiled in various book formats since 1970 by the De La Flor imprint.
Penguin was already in charge of distribution outside of Argentina, such as Spain, of several of Quino's books , so the decision by the heirs of the cartoonist, who died in 2020, had to do with unifying the entire management of the work, according to the publishing group.
"We regret that, at the decision of his nephews and heirs, we cannot continue to care for his work as we have since he chose us as his home more than half a century ago," Ediciones De La Flor said in a statement posted on its social media.
Joaquín Lavado, Quino, died without direct descendants, so the power over his work was inherited by his niece and assistant, Julieta Colombo , who also died in 2023. After that death, the copyright over Mafalda and the cartoonist's books remained in the hands of five other nephews , who decided to migrate from Ediciones De La Flor to Penguin Random House.
"In any case, we are certain that history will keep our names inextricably linked, as they have been until now," added the publishing house founded by Daniel Divinsky in 1966 in Buenos Aires.
