Energy and mining attract 39% of foreign investment

Energy and mining attract 39% of foreign investment

Between January and March 2025, the energy and mining sectors together raised $516 million , representing 39% of the total received during this period, which amounted to $1,329.3 million.

Of this amount, $341.5 million corresponds to the energy sector , representing 25.69% of the national total , while $174.9 million was raised by the mining sector .

This last figure was key to the mining sector's year-over-year growth of 389.92%, positioning it as one of the sectors with the greatest growth potential.

"The sustained dynamism of these sectors confirms the confidence of international investors in the country's strategic vision, which is committed to a responsible energy transition and modern, sustainable mining ," said the Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos , in this regard.

He stated that, in the last three years, both sectors have attracted more than $3.5 billion in foreign investment , including record annual flows from the energy sector in 2023 ($1.071 billion) and 2024 ($1.14 billion), positioning it as the second sector with the greatest attraction of foreign capital, only behind tourism.

Santos indicated that, thanks to this investment, important projects are being implemented that will increase the country's installed thermal capacity by 2,179 megawatts (MW) between 2025 and 2028, representing a 54% increase over that period.

He said that this year's highlights include the entry into operation of CESPM 4 (Energas) in San Pedro de Macorís, which will add 130 MW; the completion of the SIBA power cycle in Boca Chica , with an additional 68 MW; and Manzanillo Power Land ( Energia 2000) in Manzanillo, Montecristi, which will contribute 414 MW when it comes online by the end of 2025.

Currently, there are 33 projects in commercial operation totaling 1,418.47 MW ; 20 under construction, which will add 1,006.25 MW; 22 at the start of construction (1,551.37 MW); 26 in the final process (1,712.48 MW); and 25 with provisional concessions (1,280.37 MW).

Among the most notable projects to add energy to the system this year are the Mirasol solar parks in Guerra , with 100 MW; Cotoperí, La Romana (146 MW); Sajoma , in San José de las Matas (76 MW); Coastal , in San Pedro de Macorís (110 MW); and Payita I , in María Trinidad Sánchez (50 MW).

"These developments consolidate a more resilient , sustainable , and diversified electrical system ," the minister concluded.
