Hotel prices rise by 5.2%: average room rates were almost €130 in June.

Life is becoming more expensive, a common phrase in everyday conversations, and even more so during the summer months. When vacations arrive, for many people, more than just a respite and a break from everyday life, they mean a financial balancing act. Hotel nights cost 5.2% more than in 2024 , another blow to citizens' wallets. This is according to provisional data published today by the National Statistics Institute (INE) on the hotel situation for the month of June.
On the other hand, the hotel sector is taking advantage of the high season months to generate revenue and offset expenses and potential losses for the rest of the year. INE data show an increase in revenue of nearly €130 on average per occupied room, 5.5% more than in June 2024. In this sense, hotel nights exceeded 38.9 million in June , equivalent to a 2.1% increase compared to the same period last year. Those of foreign tourists showed the best year-on-year growth, with a 3.7% growth compared to the 1.3% decrease recorded for residents in Spain. Thus, the loss of purchasing power of the average Spaniard in the face of high hotel prices is forcing domestic tourism to flee abroad .
While Spanish citizens are looking for cheaper alternatives outside Spain, English and German tourists chose Spain as their holiday destination. Overnight stays by travelers from the United Kingdom and Germany accounted for 28.8% and 17.1% , respectively, of the total hotel nights recorded among non-residents. France, the United States, and the Netherlands were the main sources of tourists visiting Spanish hotels, representing 6.6%, 5.2%, and 4.3% of the total.
Of the total available beds, the INE reports an occupancy rate of 66.1% , a 1.5% annual increase, despite the decline recorded during the first quarter of the year. The most popular option among travelers was the weekend overnight stay. The occupancy rate between Friday and Sunday increased by 2.5%, reaching 72.8% of the total. Likewise, the autonomous community with the highest traffic was the Balearic Islands, with 82.2% of its beds filled. Among the tourist areas, Palma-Calvià in Mallorca was the most popular.
Along with the Canary Islands and Catalonia, the Balearic Islands were the main regions chosen by non-residents to enjoy the Spanish sun, sand, and holiday atmosphere, accounting for 33.7%, 18.7%, and 17.8% of the total, respectively. However, Spanish tourists opted for more affordable locations such as Andalusia, with 21.7% of the total; Catalonia, the region with the lowest increase in hotel prices (1.6%), was the choice of 15.3% of Spanish travelers; and the Valencian Community, with 13.1% of the total.
While the 5.2% year-on-year increase in the Hotel Price Index hurt tourists' pockets, especially those traveling to the Principality of Asturias, where it increased by 10.3%, hotel revenue was the direct beneficiary of these increases, with an average daily rate of 129.5 euros. Under these positive signs for hotel profitability, the average revenue per available room increased by 7.8%, to 97.2 euros .
By category, the largest price increase occurred in two-gold-star establishments, with a 9.2% increase compared to June 2024 and an average revenue of €56.80. Five-star hotels, meanwhile, recorded an average daily rate of €307.80 and an average revenue per available room of €227.60. For four- and three-star establishments, the figures are €133.10 and €104.50 (revenue) and €109.10 and €81.10 (revenue), respectively.
