CNE sets internal consultations for October ahead of 2026 elections

Popular, internal or inter-party consultations for the selection of candidates for the 2026 presidential elections will be held on October 26 of this year.
This was established by the National Electoral Council through resolution 00701 of February 19, 2025, a document in which they also announce that parties, political movements and significant groups of citizens who wish to use this mechanism must communicate their decision in writing before July 26.

The parties or movements will also have until September 11 to carry out surveys, polls, conventions or assemblies that will allow them to define the pre-candidates.
The CNE also established that those pre-candidates who wish to participate in the consultations will have to register between September 19 and 26 at the National Civil Registry.
The internal consultation question designed by the parties must be submitted to the CNE before September 11. The body will have 10 calendar days to make a decision and, if it is not approved, a period of five days will be granted to modify it.
"The questions that are approved will be immediately sent to the National Civil Registry for the relevant purposes," the resolution says.

The resolution also indicates that parties or movements will have a deadline to retract their initial decision no later than September 26 , that is, one month before the date of the consultations.
It is important to note that, unlike the 2022 elections, the consultations will be held in October and not in November of the year prior to the elections.
