Jacques Martial, born in Saint-Mandé (Val-de-Marne) to Guadeloupean parents, was "a man committed to the memory of slavery, the promotion of the creativity of overseas artists, and the visibility of black artists," Anne Hidalgo emphasized. He notably performed at the theater Cahier d'un retour au pays natal by the Martinican writer Aimé Césaire and chaired the Mémorial ACTe, the slavery museum in Pointe-à-Pitre (Guadeloupe), from 2015 to 2020.
"He was unanimously appreciated by all his colleagues, kind, cultured, full of humor," paid tribute to him the Paris MP Emmanuel Grégoire, who had included him on his list in the 12th arrondissement for the 2020 municipal elections.
