The ephemeris of July 9: in 1877, the opening of the first Wimbledon tournament

On July 9, 1877, the oldest tennis tournament in the world opened in London, United Kingdom: the Wimbledon Championships (or "The Championships").
Created by the AELTC (All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club), this grass-court tournament is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments, alongside the Australian Open (Melbourne), Roland Garros (Paris), and the US Open (New York). Wimbledon generally takes place from late June to mid-July.
Wimbledon opened its doors to professional players in 1968. Since then, the court has seen many players win, such as Roger Federer in singles (between 2003 and 2017), Todd Woodbridge in doubles (between 1993 and 2004), Martina Navrátilová in singles (between 1978 and 1990), as well as Billie Jean King in doubles (between 1961 and 1979). In 2024, the very famous Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz ( who triumphed this year at Roland Garros ) won this tournament.
