Childcare supplement: future rules more favorable to single-parent and low-income families

Changes are coming to parents of children under six, starting September 1st . Those who employ a childminder or a home caregiver will see changes in the calculation of the free choice of childcare supplement, a benefit paid by family allowance funds. Around 700,000 families are affected by the reform, according to the Ministry of Solidarity and Families.
Until now, the payment of this aid was calculated based on three income brackets, without taking into account the number of hours of employment of the childminder or nanny. Several "bonuses" were taken into account to define the amount received, such as family composition or the age of the child. A system that is unclear and leads to "significant threshold effects" , explains the entourage of Minister Catherine Vautrin, which defends a logic of simplification.
From the start of the school year in September, a more detailed calculation will be carried out, taking into account not only the parents' income but also the number of hours paid, based on the model used for families whose child attends a nursery.
