Relatives of victims of defective Takata airbags are asking: could the deaths caused by the exploding products have been prevented? Our colleagues at "Envoyé Spécial" have gathered revealing documents showing that the U.S. Senate opened an investigation into the matter as early as 2014.
Vicky Abeli's life changed dramatically in July 2024. Her father was killed on the roads of Guadeloupe by the Takata airbag in his Toyota Yaris. "Apparently, he hit the car in front at very low speed, and instead of inflating, the airbag exploded," she says. Today, she is demanding that the thirty or so manufacturers involved acknowledge their responsibility.
"Toyota knew about this defective airbag, since Takata, which is the airbag's manufacturer, has been condemned in the United States since 2017," points out Vicky Abeli. As shown by documents collected by our colleagues at "Envoyé Spécial" for their report of January 23, 2025 , the American Senate had opened an investigation as early as 2014 after a series of accidents. The tests carried out on Takata airbags are edifying: they conclude that they have a lifespan of six years in hot and humid regions.
Today, a class action bringing together 2,800 victims and their loved ones was launched.
