Gas prices: why have bills been soaring since the beginning of February?

After several months of calm, the price of gas is soaring again. It was at 59 euros per megawatt hour at the beginning of February 2025, a level not seen in two years. How can we explain such a price increase? This winter, cold spells have followed one after another, and heating has been running at full blast. Stocks are therefore half empty in Europe, and even three-quarters in France. French sites are currently 23.5% full, while they were more than 46% on the same day a year ago. All countries are stocking up, increasing demand and prices with it. Another factor in the increase is the war in Ukraine, which has reduced the supply of Russian gas.
