Macron rules out any nationalization of ArcelorMittal and promises to "save" the Fos and Dunkirk sites

"We must put in place what we call safeguard clauses, that is to say, protect the European market," the President of the Republic argued.
Skip the ad Skip the ad"I am not going to nationalize ArcelorMittal because that would mean spending billions of euros," Emmanuel Macron assured on Tuesday, saying "eye to eye" that the sites of Dunkirk (Nord) and Fos-sur-Mer (Bouches-du-Rhône) would be "saved." "The answer is not to nationalize (but) to have guarantees of development," the head of state argued during an interview on TF1 where he was confronted by the general secretary of the CGT, Sophie Binet .
"We need to put in place what are called safeguard clauses, that is, to protect the European market. We began to make this decision under French pressure: the Commission announced it in February," argued Emmanuel Macron. The head of state did, however, make a promise: "We are going to save both Dunkirk and Fos, I tell you this face to face, not by nationalizing but by having a European policy that protects our steel."
Earlier this Tuesday, several hundred ArcelorMittal employees demonstrated outside the steelmaker's French headquarters to defend their jobs and the future of steel in France, putting pressure on management, which is considering cutting more than 600 jobs in the country. ArcelorMittal France President Alain le Grix de la Salle is expected to appear before the National Assembly's commission of inquiry on May 20.
