Notebooks, pens, school bags... Why school supplies are still expensive this year

Prices have increased by an average of 2% compared to last year, according to UFC-Que Choisir. This represents a further increase, after prices had already skyrocketed in 2022.
By Gwenael BourdonBeach umbrellas are barely being unfurled on the beaches, and already Stitch diaries, Harry Potter school bags, and 96-page large-squared notebooks, among other items, have colonized supermarket shelves. Summer is also the season for school supplies, a far from trivial expense .
On Saturday, at the Carrefour hypermarket in Rosny-sous-Bois (Seine-Saint-Denis), we encountered parents, list in hand, looking for bargains. "Back to school is expensive," says Souad, who came with her daughters Houria, soon to be in 6th grade, and Sofia, on the threshold of CM1. The mother and daughters balked at a case of 18 Stabilo fine-tip markers: "14.39 euros, that's impossible! On the other hand, we got 18 Bic pens at 70% off, which came to 1.69 euros. We were hesitant to buy a Clairefontaine notebook, which has very smooth pages. But given the price, we might settle for the Carrefour brand..." Souad keeps an eye on the bill: "I have the impression that it's gotten more expensive over the past two or three years."
