Sluggish sales, Chinese competition: why Tesla, the king of electric cars, is faltering

The causes are cyclical, linked to Elon Musk's divisive positions, but also structural, associated with a short and aging range, experts point out. The problems could last without a new model in 2025.

Specifically, the American manufacturer registered 7,517 vehicles in January 2025 compared to more than 15,000 last January. In the two major markets of France and Germany, the decline is particularly severe: -63.4% in France and -59.5% across the Rhine.
From the setbacks in European concessions to the New York trading room, the consequences were not long in coming. The stock price of the king of electric vehicles fell by more than 8% on Tuesday on Wall Street, and continued to fall on Wednesday (-1.30% at the time of writing).
