The European Union will extend the suspension of tariffs on steel and aluminum against the United States until August.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Sunday (July 13) that Brussels would extend the suspension of countermeasures to US tariffs on steel and aluminum, as the European Union (EU) seeks a deal to avoid a 30% tax on all its products.
"The United States has sent us a letter with measures that would come into force unless there is a negotiated solution, which is why we will also extend the suspension of our countermeasures until the beginning of August," said Ms. von der Leyen, while the suspension of these retaliations to the American customs duties on steel and aluminum was due to expire on Monday night.
US President Donald Trump announced a 30% tariff surcharge on the European Union (EU) and Mexico on Saturday . These tariffs will take effect on August 1 , the Republican billionaire said in separate letters published on his Truth Social platform.
Europe responded by criticizing the decision, while still saying it was ready to continue working on an agreement. " We remain ready to continue working towards an agreement by August 1. At the same time, we will take all necessary measures to safeguard the EU's interests, including the adoption of proportionate countermeasures if necessary," the President of the European Commission warned at the time.
