Trump announces trade deal with UK, hints at more to come

US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday, May 8, an imminent "total and complete" agreement with the United Kingdom, while a trade agreement between the two countries is expected according to the American press.

"The agreement with the UK is total and complete, and will cement the US-UK relationship for many years to come," the US president wrote on his TruthSocial network. "Because of our long history and loyalty, it is a great honor to have the UK as our FIRST announcement. Many other agreements, which are in serious stages of negotiation, will follow!" he added.

The New York Times and Politico published reports of an impending agreement, citing sources close to the negotiations. According to the Wall Street Journal, it specifically refers to a framework for negotiations for an agreement.

Keir Starmer 'will speak later today'

Donald Trump is scheduled to hold a press conference in the Oval Office of the White House at 10 a.m. local time (3 p.m. Paris time).

On the British side, a spokesperson for Prime Minister Keir Starmer indicated Thursday that "negotiations on an agreement between our two countries have continued at a sustained pace" and that Keir Starmer "will speak later today" , adding that "the United States is an indispensable ally for our economy and our national security" .

This trade agreement would be the first since Donald Trump announced significant tariffs on April 2.
