The European Union (EU) will refer the matter to the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the customs duties imposed by Donald Trump on its exports to the United States, the European Commission announced on Thursday, May 8.
The European Commission will "soon" submit a request for consultations with the Geneva-based international organization, the first step in a dispute settlement procedure, regarding the US surcharges. The EU executive denounces "a flagrant violation of WTO rules" and intends to "reaffirm the importance of respecting international rules."
