What the heatwave is likely to cost

Economists at global insurance giant Allianz have published their initial estimates of the economic impact of the heatwave. In France, with twelve days of intense heat already underway, employment could decline by 0.5% and GDP by 0.3%, a greater impact than during the 2003 heatwave. To give you an idea, one day of heatwave weighs as much on the economy as a half-day of strike action.
