These 6 cancers are on the rise among 15-39 year olds
Between 2000 and 2014, the overall incidence of cancer among 15-39 year-olds increased by 1.62% per year, before decreasing by 0.79% annually between 2015 and 2020. This large-scale study, the result of a partnership between Santé publique France, the National Cancer Institute, the FRANCIM network and the Hospices Civils de Lyon, is based on data from 19 departments representing nearly a quarter of the metropolitan population.

Developed by the American company Teal Health and launched in California in June, this self-collected vaginal swab will be available online for people aged 25 to 65 who are at average risk of cervical cancer.

Vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, which cause most cervical cancers, and regular examinations are effective in preventing the disease, but more than one in four women are not screened regularly enough.

HPV, or human papillomavirus, is a particularly common virus, extremely contagious, and affects us all. As the French National Cancer Institute (INCa) indicates, "while HPV infections generally disappear within a few months, a small proportion can persist and develop into cancer." They are responsible for 6,400 new cases of anogenital and ENT cancers in France each year. Tumors caused by the infection can, for some, be avoided through preventive measures such as vaccination and screening.

“When we make care more accessible, we help women stay healthy—for themselves and for the people who rely on them every day,” Kara Egan, Teal Health’s CEO, said in a statement.

The company did not disclose pricing, but said it is working with insurers to ensure the product is affordable.

Each kit includes instructions for connecting with healthcare professionals who can order the test, interpret its results, and guide users through the process.

The swab can detect high-risk strains of HPV/HPV.

Cervical cancer screening: when AI avoids unnecessary treatments
Every year in France, nearly 3,000 cases of cervical cancer are recorded, and 1,100 women still die from it. While screening for the human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus responsible for cervical cancer, effectively detects the presence of this infectious microorganism, it does not, however, reliably distinguish between transient, non-serious infections and precancerous or cancerous lesions. This low specificity leads to an increase in consultations and an increase in the number of colposcopies (estimated at 70%). This examination, which consists of observing the cervix using a microscope after applying a dye, reveals precancerous or cancerous lesions. However, more than 40% of colposcopies performed do not detect any abnormalities. This situation leads to overdiagnosis and overtreatment, particularly by conization. This is a procedure that removes part of the cervix and can affect fertility and pregnancy.

A clinical trial showed that its accuracy was comparable to that of smears, which are performed using a speculum and are known to be uncomfortable.
