"An unacceptable act of indecency." The Minister Delegate for Remembrance and Veterans Affairs, Patricia Mirallès, announced that she was taking legal action on Tuesday, August 5, after a video appeared on social media showing a man walking on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, under the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and lighting his cigarette with the eternal flame. The images were notably relayed on X by the Union of Internal Security Executives.

"I am immediately contacting the Paris public prosecutor to ensure that this individual is found and that exemplary sanctions are imposed. We cannot flout the memory of France with impunity," wrote Minister Patricia Mirallès on X.
According to the minister, this is an "insult to our dead, to our history, to our nation." "This is not just incivility: it is an outrage to the memory of those who fell for France," she added. "This flame does not light a cigarette: it watches over the sacrifice of millions of our soldiers."
