Death of Olivier Marleix, former president of the Republican deputies

Olivier Marleix, the Republican MP for Eure-et-Loire, former president of the LR group in the National Assembly, died "brutally," his successor as leader of the LR deputies, Laurent Wauquiez, announced on Tuesday. "Before the information was made public, I wanted to inform you of the sudden passing of Olivier Marleix, our colleague, friend, and former group president. He leaves infinite sorrow behind him," Wauquiez wrote in a message to LR deputies shortly before 4:30 p.m. Several other sources at LR confirmed this death to Libération. According to parliamentary sources consulted by AFP, the MP took his own life.
Olivier Marleix, 54, had served continuously in the National Assembly since 2012. The son of another right-wing figure, former MP and Secretary of State Alain Marleix, he had been an advisor to the Élysée Palace under Nicolas Sarkozy's presidency and president of the LR MPs from 2022 to 2024. A sober personality, he was uncompromisingly anti-Macron. Among his main grievances against the head of state was the sale of Alstom Energie to General Electric in 2015, authorized by Macron, then Minister of the Economy: the result, according to Marleix, of a "corruption pact" benefiting the future president.
