European Public Prosecutor's Office opens investigation into National Rally for embezzlement of public funds in Parliament

The European Public Prosecutor's Office formalized on Tuesday, July 8, the launch of an investigation into the National Rally (RN). The far-right party is accused of being at the center of a new case of embezzlement of public funds, involving at least €4.33 million, within the European Parliament.

The National Rally is once again accused of embezzling money from the European Parliament.

The European Public Prosecutor's Office announced on Tuesday, July 8, that it had opened an investigation into the National Rally (RN), the party of Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella, as well as their far-right allies in Brussels, suspected of various financial irregularities . A spokesperson for the European Public Prosecutor's Office announced to Agence France-Presse (AFP) that the institution would not provide further details "in order not to compromise the results of the investigation."

Following the conviction of Marine Le Pen and twenty-four co-defendants in the fictitious jobs trial, the National Rally (RN) is once again at the center of a case of embezzlement of public funds within the European Parliament. These serious accusations were revealed on Thursday, July 3, by an investigation by the daily newspaper Le Monde in collaboration with the German investigative program Kontraste , the German magazine Die Zeit and the Austrian weekly Falter .

At least €4.33 million spent by the Identity and Democracy (ID) parliamentary group, which brings together around ten far-right parties including the National Rally from 2019 to 2024, was allegedly in violation of parliamentary rules. These accusations are based on a thirty-one-page report, still confidential, from the European institution's Directorate-General for Finance. This document was drafted a few weeks earlier, following a routine financial audit of the ID group's accounts and financial records, on the occasion of its dissolution in July 2024.

It's step by step, argument against argument, that we must fight the far right. And that's what we do every day in L'Humanité.

In the face of relentless attacks from racists and hatemongers: support us! Together, let's make another voice heard in this increasingly nauseating public debate. I want to know more.
