Even for Trump's supporters, his anti-immigration policies go too far

Raids, arrests, and mass deportations... By targeting illegal immigrants in every direction, the American president is alienating former supporters. In particular, Latino voters who voted for him in November but now feel he's overstepping the mark, according to this report from the Washington Post in California.
Jesus Martinez, 36, works in the aerospace industry. He tells us he was initially supportive of President Trump's decision to send in the military to quell protests against migrant deportations in California. But when he saw the images of ICE raids near schools and workplaces, with families separated, it made him uneasy.
“This is going too far. It’s too much!” he protests. This former Democratic voter, who supported Donald Trump in 2020 and abstained in the 2024 election, adds: “They said it would only affect criminals, but now they’re claiming that because people entered the country illegally, they’re criminals.”
“Latinos who voted for Trump had no idea he was going to attack children.”
The president's promises to crack down on illegal immigration helped him win back the White House in 2024 by winning votes among young voters, Latinos, and working-class people. But interviews with about 50 people in the Antelope Valley, about an hour north of Los Angeles, revealed that this tactic is not without impact.
