In the midst of a heatwave, the right and the far right are jubilant in rejecting ecological measures

Following the abolition of the ZFE (Prohibition Zones), elected representatives of the Republicans joined the National Rally to introduce a moratorium on wind and photovoltaic projects in France. This is primarily an electioneering move, analyzes the columnist for Le Temps in Switzerland, which should encourage the government to react immediately.

This week was marked by a strange celebration in France. It was in the midst of an exceptional heatwave. And on the very day [June 19, 2025] that an international consortium of scientists published a report stating that the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels was now unattainable. Exactly ten years after the Paris Climate Agreement, of which respecting this numerical limit was one of the goals.

In this suffocating context (in the first sense of the term), the French right did not have enough words to rejoice at having succeeded, [on Wednesday, May 28] with the extreme right, in burying an anti-artificialization (concreting) of soils measure and especially the low emission zones (ZFE), which were supposed to limit automobile pollution in certain French cities. The same alliance of circumstance also rejoiced at having passed an amendment during the night of Thursday to Friday imposing an immediate moratorium on all new wind or photovoltaic installations.

In all these cases, it is the traditional right, that of the Republicans who participate in the government, who have allied themselves with the National Rally against the advice of Macron.
