"I left him free to choose": Gianluigi Buffon , interviewed by Repubblica , said this about his son Louis Thomas, who will play for the Under 18 national team of the Czech Republic , the country of his mother Alena Seredova, after being called up by coach Vaclav Jilek. The youngster currently plays as a striker for Pisa and recently received his first call-up from Pippo Inzaghi to the first team in Serie B.

The former Azzurri goalkeeper and now team manager of Spalletti's national team also explained how the Czech Republic managed to convince his son: "He speaks three languages, including Czech, but that's not the point. Nedved and Poborsky, one of them a former teammate of mine and the other a former colleague who I know very well, were very nice and discreet at the same time. For eight months they courted Louis Thomas, without pestering him. I told him that I would give him maximum freedom ."

The youngster's choice, however, would have been right according to his father Buffon: "I think that at this moment he has taken the best direction for him, because the weight of his surname, if he had gone to the youth team of the Azzurri, would have put a lot of pressure on him. They could have said that he was recommended and there would have been very high expectations right away. This way, instead, he will have the opportunity to grow as a footballer with more serenity. And when he is old enough, if necessary, nothing will stop him from wearing the Azzurri shirt". Although he finally added: "It's strange to see a Buffon with a shirt other than that of Italy. It's strange to me too".
