The plan to combat prison overcrowding was the focus of yesterday's meeting at Palazzo Chigi with Justice Minister Carlo Nordio (photo). During the meeting, it was decided that the bill would include provisions on home detention for drug and alcohol-dependent inmates, thus easing the burden on prisons. Today, in addition to the Senate's approval of the reform of the judiciary with the separation of careers , the prison plan is also expected in the Council of Ministers.
Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani commented on the justice reform : "With the separation of careers that reaches the Senate after the green light from the Chamber of Deputies, it will be an important step that is not against the judiciary. There is no animosity toward magistrates." Deputy Minister Francesco Paolo Sisto also returned to the topic: "This justice reform is not a crusade against the judiciary, as the National Magistrates' Association claims, but rather 'a reform in the interests of citizens.'"
