A crucial step is underway for the future of the former Ilva steelworks and the entire Taranto steelworks. The Ministry of Business and Made in Italy, acting on the recommendation of Minister Adolfo Urso, has convened the first meeting of the Technical Committee responsible for assessing the natural gas supply needed to ensure the steelworks' energy transition for Monday, July 21st, at 3:00 PM.
The Committee, established at the proposal of Minister Urso following a meeting with all local and national institutional stakeholders, will also be called upon to examine the technical feasibility of building Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plants in the Ionian region, which are essential for the production of green steel, in line with the national decarbonization plan. The panel will include technicians from MIMIT and MASE, along with representatives from Snam SpA, the Puglia Region, the Province of Taranto, the Municipalities of Taranto and Statte, the Ionian Sea Port System Authority, and the special commissioners of Acciaierie d'Italia in extraordinary administration and Ilva in extraordinary administration.
The Committee's conclusions will inform the July 31 meeting at MIMIT, where the aim is to sign the Interinstitutional Program Agreement for the plant's decarbonization. Meanwhile, as part of the preparatory meetings, Minister Urso met with Antonio Messeni Petruzzelli, president of the Mediterranean Technopole Research Institute Foundation for Sustainable Development in Taranto, at Palazzo Piacentini.
