In Sardinia

Gaia Costa was killed by an SUV in Porto Cervo. The wife of Lufthansa CEO is under investigation: she has already returned to Germany.

Her friends called her “Costina” because of her petite build. Gaia Costa , 24, died on Tuesday, July 8, on a road in Porto Cervo , a popular resort in Sardinia, struck near a pedestrian crossing by an SUV driven by German woman Vivian Spohr , 51, wife of Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr.

The young woman from Tempio Pausania was there with some friends when, crossing Via Aga Khan, the car driven by Vivian Spohr hit her: in the images from a security camera, reported by Repubblica and Corriere della Sera, Gaia can be seen raising her arm to warn the driver to stop, but the BMW continues straight on and hits her head on.

On impact, the young woman, who worked as a seasonal babysitter, hit her head violently on the asphalt, but was still alive when the ambulances arrived: Gaia died on arrival at the hospital due to very serious brain injuries .

Vivian Spohr immediately stopped to provide assistance , along with one of her two daughters in the SUV. "She immediately realized what had happened, put her hands to her face, and collapsed," one of the witnesses reported. The German family has been spending summer holidays on the island for years, having purchased a villa in the area. While husband Carsten runs the German airline, his wife is involved in the nonprofit Help Alliance , founded under the umbrella of the German carrier.

Spohr has been registered in the register of suspects by the Tempio Pausania prosecutor Milena Aucone on charges of road homicide : after the fatal accident the 51-year-old German woman returned to Munich .

This isn't an escape, especially since the woman was under no obligation to remain in Italy, but the news hasn't been welcomed by Gaia Costa's family and friends: a departure that could also make the Prosecutor's Office's work with Gregorio Capasso more difficult.

As part of the investigation, Vivian Spohr's SUV was seized, as were the footage from the area's surveillance cameras. The German woman's alcohol and drug tests were negative .

Gaia's father, Alfredo Costa, is a longtime CISL union representative in Gallura. The family is maintaining maximum confidentiality for now. "This is a time of grief and respect. I can only affirm that my clients have the utmost confidence in the work of the Tempio Public Prosecutor's Office," explains their lawyer, Antonello Desini.
