  • 18:30 - Animals, Di Brino (Altems Advisory): "Manage significant increase in dogs and cats"

Rome, July 1 (Adnkronos Salute) - "According to some data from the Global Burden of Disease Study, the Italian population will decrease by the end of the century. At the same time, however, a counter-trend is observed, namely the significant increase in companion animals", dogs and cats. "We are therefore witnessing a change that must be governed in terms of processes and innovation, giving space to research and above all to technologies that bring benefits in terms of lower burden for accessory costs linked to a lack of attention and understanding of health, both human and veterinary, increasingly interconnected". Thus Eugenio Di Brino, Altems researcher, co-founder & partner of Altems Advisory spin off Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, at the event on the central role of veterinary research and innovation promoted by Senator Guido Quintino Liris, which took place today in the Senate, underlines how "more than 58% of recent" epidemics "are zoonoses", therefore due to the jump of species from animal to human of pathogens, such as those responsible for monkeypox or Covid-19.

"The report we are presenting, born from the collaboration with Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Italia - continues Di Brino - was created through a desk analysis and is aimed at studying the concept of one health in its entirety. As health economists and scholars of the world of human health, we wanted to correlate and delve into the concept of one health, also looking at the other side of the coin, that is, everything that concerns the world of animal health, the so-called animal health, and the impact it has in terms of veterinary health. Several studies - he points out - confirm the benefit in terms of economic return of the investment in the animal world. The greater presence of companion animals in Italian families also entails, as confirmed by other studies, a benefit for the quality of life, helping for example with conditions of anxiety and depression. The correlation between the human and animal worlds is therefore increasingly strong", he concludes.
