Google AI Edge Gallery: AI Models on Your Smartphone

Google has released the AI Edge Gallery app for Android that lets you run four generative AI models on your smartphone. Users can download them for free from Hugging Face, as they are open source. They therefore work offline and without access to the cloud.
AI models on the smartphoneThe most well-known AI models (GPT, Gemini, Llama and others) work exclusively in the cloud, as they require enormous computing power. However, there are also so-called SLM (Small Language Model), small models that work directly on the smartphone . This allows for greater performance and personal data is not sent to remote servers.
The Google AI Edge Gallery app for Android (iOS version coming in the next few weeks) can be installed via APK file (about 115 MB), following these instructions . Upon launch, the three available features are shown: Ask Image, Prompt Lab and AI Chat.
Ask Image lets you upload an image and ask about its content, identify objects, and solve mathematical problems. This feature can be used with the Gemma 3n model with 2 or 4 billion parameters (3.1 and 4.4 GB).
Prompt Lab allows you to get summaries, rewrite text and generate code. This feature is also supported by the Gemma 3 models with 1 billion parameters (554.7 MB) and Qwent 2.5 with 1.5 billion parameters (1.6 GB).
Finally, AI Chat allows you to have a conversation. The feature is supported by all the models already listed. The download is done by Hugging Face (Gemma 3 and 3n require an account). The source code and all the information is available on GitHub .
