Motion of no confidence in Ursula von der Leyen: accusations of authoritarianism and a “council of war” tone

Motion of no confidence in Ursula von der Leyen: accusations of authoritarianism and a “council of war” tone

The European Parliament has staged an unprecedented debate around a motion of no confidence against Commission President Ursula von der Leyen – a rare event (the first vote of censure at the top of the Commission since 2014). . The initiative was launched by Romanian MEP Gheorghe Piperea , a member of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group and a member of the far-right party Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR). However, Piperea managed to collect 77 signatures of support, mainly from right-wing MPs and those with so-called “anti-system” positions (but saying “anti-system” today is equivalent to saying globalist anti-authoritarianism, with no connection to the original motivation of European Unity), thus exceeding the quorum of one tenth of the members of the European Parliament needed to put the no-confidence vote to the vote. The vote is scheduled for Thursday, July 10 in the plenary session in Strasbourg.
