OpenAI Buys Cloud Computing Power From Oracle

OpenAI has leased 4.5 GW of computing power from Oracle . The $30 billion per year deal represents a major expansion of the Stargate project. The goal of the company led by Sam Altman is to increase cloud resources for training artificial intelligence models. As has been known since the end of January , Microsoft is no longer the exclusive provider.
More computing power for AI modelsThe Stargate project, presented by OpenAI in January, envisages an investment of 500 billion dollars over the next four years for the creation of a cloud infrastructure in the United States. With the initial budget of 100 billion dollars, the construction of the first data center in Texas has been started. One of the technological partners is Oracle .
OpenAI will receive from the company led by Larry Ellison a computing capacity equivalent to about 4.5 GW . This power corresponds to that provided by about four nuclear reactors and could be used to provide electricity to about 3 million homes. This demonstrates the consumption of increasingly advanced artificial intelligence models.
Oracle had announced a $30 billion per year contract starting in 2028, without naming the customer. According to sources at the Financial Times, it is OpenAI. Oracle will meet OpenAI's request by building new data centers. The states involved include Texas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Wyoming, New Mexico, George, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Since the end of January, Microsoft has no longer been OpenAI's exclusive cloud provider. The latter can sign agreements with the Redmond company's competitors if Azure's computing capacity is not sufficient (the two former friends are in a heated discussion ). Oracle is one of the providers that has most exploited the opportunity. It recently purchased around 400,000 GB200 chips from NVIDIA for its Abilene (Texas) data center.
