Protesters set fire to dumpsters around Netanyahu's home

Protesters set fire to dumpsters around Netanyahu's home

The "Day of Unrest," called to demand the release of the hostages and an immediate end to the war, began early this morning with protesters setting fire to several dumpsters around Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem, creating a "ring of fire" around the site. One of the fires was set 100 meters from the prime minister's official residence. The protest leaders are Anat Engerst, mother of kidnapped Matan, and Vicky Cohen, mother of Nimrod. The demonstrations began spontaneously at 6:30 a.m. (5:30 a.m. in Italy) but were scheduled to arrive at the Knesset at noon.

Jerusalem police said in a statement that dumpsters and tires were set on fire, damaging several cars, in the Rehavia (the prime minister's residence) and Givat Ram neighborhoods in Jerusalem. Residents were evacuated from nearby buildings, though no one was injured. Firefighters extinguished the fires. In other areas of the Holy City, dozens of protesters, including members of the Brothers and Sisters in Arms group, gathered outside the home of Minister Ron Dermer, accusing him of failing to secure the return of a single hostage through a deal since becoming Israel's chief negotiator. In a statement, protesters described the talks as a "total failure" and accused the government of capitulating to the far right and "sinking" a truce proposal accepted by Hamas. Meanwhile, some people barricaded themselves in the National Library in Jerusalem and climbed onto the roof; police are negotiating with them to get them to come down. The protest is also spreading to the Knesset area
