Romania, pro-Russian candidate Georgescu arrested by police

Bucharest He had won the first round of the presidential elections last November. The elections were then annulled by the Constitutional Court for alleged Russian interference in the electoral campaign
Incitement to actions against the constitutional order, spreading false information, making false statements and promoting the cult of people accused of genocide and war crimes, establishing and supporting fascist, racist and xenophobic groups. These are, among others, the charges with which the High Court of Cassation of Romania has entered the far-right strongman, Calin Georgescu, in the register of suspects. Serious charges, which entail sentences of between 15 and 25 years in prison and the deprivation of certain rights, as provided for by Article 397 of the Romanian Penal Code.
Georgescu was stopped in traffic this afternoon and taken by the gendarmerie directly before the judges, just as he was going to formalize his candidacy for the upcoming presidential elections on May 4 and 18 and while the police were searching 47 addresses of people close to him in the counties of Sibiu, Mureș, Timiș, Ilfov and Cluj, also involving that of Horațiu Potra, the mercenary close collaborator of the presidential candidate. During the operation, weapons, ammunition and over a million dollars in cash were found.
Semi-unknown to the general public, triumphant to everyone's surprise in the first round of the presidential elections in November, then annulled by the Constitutional Court for Russian interference in the electoral process through the TikTok platform, presumably the favorite in the next elections, Georgescu is now on the ropes, unable to participate in the presidential elections. Even if, as history has often shown, the step from loser to martyr could be very short.
The anti-European and pro-Russian engineer from Bucharest has shown that he has a good feeling with his electorate, who have taken to the streets several times since November to shout their disappointment at the sensational and, to be honest, unclear cancellation of the first round of elections. He is supported by the American right, who also intervened yesterday with Elon Musk on X (“They just arrested the person who got the most votes in the Romanian presidential elections. This is absurd”), but above all he could become the symbol of the far-right's ride in the Balkan country.
