Trump: No agreement from Alaska Summit. Putin speaks of agreements.

Milan, August 16 (askanews) – "There's no agreement until there's an agreement." This was stated by US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin at the end of their joint press conference, where there were no questions from journalists, only official statements from the two leaders.

After less than three hours of talks between Putin and Trump, many question marks remain. The war in Ukraine was supposed to be the main topic of the Alaska summit, but neither said anything concrete about it in the joint press conference, which was also extremely brief, lasting only twelve minutes.

Trump and Putin essentially ended the joint press conference without answering questions or sharing details of the Ukraine talks. Nor was a possible ceasefire mentioned during the appearance in Anchorage.

Putin spoke of agreements that could represent the starting point for a solution to the conflict. Trump spoke of the need for the war to end. Putin wants it as much as he does, he said.

Trump said there was no agreement yet on Ukraine, but that progress had been made. He added that he would contact Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and NATO allies after the press conference. Trump said there were "only a very few" issues to resolve, but gave no idea what those might be. "Some aren't that significant," Trump said. "One is probably the most significant, but we have a very good chance of getting there. We're not there, but we have a very good chance of getting there," he said after the talks with the Russian president, to whom he had given the first say. "We made great progress today. I've always had a very good relationship with President Putin: we've had many meetings, tough meetings, good meetings," he added.

Putin—who after the talks went to Fort Richardson National Cemetery outside Anchorage to lay flowers at the graves of Soviet pilots—thanked Trump for the "friendly" tone of their conversation and stated that Russia and the United States should "turn the page and return to cooperation." He then added defiantly: "We expect Kiev and the European capitals to perceive all this constructively and not create obstacles. They will not attempt to hinder the emerging progress with provocations or behind-the-scenes intrigues," said Putin, who spoke first after the red carpet upon his arrival.

The talks, Putin said, were constructive and meaningful. "I expect today's agreements to become a landmark not only in resolving the Ukrainian problem, but also to mark the beginning of the restoration of pragmatic and concrete relations between Russia and the United States," he said.
