Ukraine, no miracle in Alaska (ceasefire). But progress is being made. Meloni's stance wins over Macron and Starmer's. By Alberto Maggi

Donald Trump and Giorgia Meloni
The miracle didn't happen , namely, an agreement for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine . After all, it was impossible, since Kiev's leader Zelensky was not also president. But the face-to-face meeting between Trump and Putin marked a real turning point. The tycoon spoke of " progress " and " many points on which we agree ." The tsar explained that he hoped " peace " would be achieved in Ukraine, but warned Kiev and Europe (i.e., the EU and the United Kingdom) not to hinder the progress made in Ukraine.
Trump stuck to the pre-agreement with Zelensky and European leaders in the call the other day, and didn't "sell out" Ukraine. But he also re-established strong and genuine relations with the Kremlin after years of frostiness. Even if the summit wasn't a success, and it couldn't have been given the premises, it was an important step forward toward a truce and, perhaps, even peace. Of course, finalizing the details of the possible (probable?) agreement with Ukraine won't be easy.
Putin's warning to Europe , to which Trump did not object, is above all a reminder to Emmanuel Macron 's France, the most intransigent towards Moscow along with Britain's Keir Starmer . Giorgia Meloni, on the other hand (along with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz), comes out of this summit well because she was able to convince Trump not to give in even without the tone from Paris and London, which would almost certainly have derailed everything . If they are roses, they will bloom, but in the meantime, the seed of peace in Alaska has been planted. We'll see in the coming days and weeks if it will germinate.
